View Full Version : Plastic cap cause of refrigerant leak?

My AC is no longer blowing cold air. Just the other day I topped off the system with r134 and everything worked fine. Now my compressor won't engage.

I noticed the inner threaded part of the plastic cap is broken off and stuck inside the port.

Would this cause the system to drain?

That thing might be holding the shrader valve open. If it is doing so, then it will release all of the presure/refridgerant from the system. The AC compressor won't kick on if there isn't any pressure in the system.

Put a gauge on it and see if there is any pressure in it. More than likely the system is empty. If it is empty, replace the adapter and we can vacuum/refill the system at Fred's on Saturday.

I've seen the autozone R-134 kits do that and cause a slow leak. Best to get steel adaptors.

The brass ones I got at NAPA are good. You just have to remove your old schrader valves before installation, because the adapters have their own schrader valves. So you have to do it with the system empty.
