I've always found melodic/symphonic goth rock to be hypnotic and intriguing. For a while I was really into Frank Peterson's Gregorian, especially on their collaborations with Amelia Brightman (Sarah's sister). My favorite is their cover of HIM's 'Join Me'

interesting! HIM is a staple in my music library. i really enjoy symphonic/goth rock & metal... female vocalists especially have a certain hypnotic affect on me as well. i havent found a whole lot of domestic bands, so most of my favorites are from europe.

another favorite i like to blast on the stereo while driving:

I saw Stevie solo at DTE Energy Music Theatre outside Detroit about 5 years ago. Chris Isaak opened for her and did a meet and greet with fans in between acts. Now there's a man who's totally full of himself and kind of a jerk.

The coolest part about that concert was when Kid Rock made an unexpected appearance and literally just jumped up on stage, surprising Stevie and everyone in her band - they're good friends, so it was all cool and he ended up doing a duet with her!

The greatest musical performance I've ever had the pleasure to personally experience is when Sir Tom Jones performed his extended (about 12 minutes) cover of Marc Cohn's 'Walking In Memphis' at the old Mecca Auditorium in Milwaukee, WI, in 1998. He seriously received a 15 minute standing ovation from the audience. Brought a tear to my eye. Something I'll always remember / never forget. If only I could find an audio recording of that performance!

Another highlight of that concert was when Prince, who was performing that same night across the street at the Bradley Center, completely and unexpectedly stopped performing in the middle of his own concert and walked across the street to perform a duet of 'Kiss' with Tom at the Mecca. It was totally impromptu and Tom had no idea that Prince was going to crash his concert. It seriously had to have been the greatest Tom Jones concert in history!

I've seen Sir Tom Jones live 4 times and looking forward to attending several more of his concerts!

The Justin Bieber / Brittney Spears whipper snappers have no idea what they're missing!

To give you an idea, but imagine it being 100 times better and with the best / most amp'd up crowd of fans ever:

Not much of a Joplin fan (or fan of any artist that asphyxiated on their own vomit) - sorry.

Another legendary great I've managed to experience live is the great Peter Cetera. Love the duet of 'After All' (originally recorded with Cher) he does with Kim Keyes. Keyes' impression of Cher is dead on and adds a lot of fun to the live concert experience :)

I really need to make it to more Cetera shows!

I absolutely LOVE the entire EFX cast album from the original multimillion dollar MGM Grand Las Vegas stage extravaganza, staring Michael Crawford. I was actually lucky enough to see the original show live at the MGM Grand, and purchased a CD copy of the cast album from the hotel/casino/theme park's gift shop (yes, this is from back when MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park still existed). So glad I got to experience the MGM Grand Las Vegas when it was still magical and before it turned into just another Vegas strip mega resort. Hell, The Landmark was still standing and the DI was still open back then. I miss that Vegas.

Vinyl is also my preferred audio medium :)

That's a very melodic track (sometimes this genre can get a little to 'death metal' heavy for me, but not these guys) and I love the vocalist - very distinctive, like a cross between David Bowie and Peter Murphy (two of my all time favorite male vocalists)! Thanks for sharing David :)

Wow!

Huge mixture here!

My music depends which car I'm driving. But in the D, it's usually 80s New Romantic / Electro stuff. There's so much of it, I never hear the same song twice in one drive.

Bands like (including their one hit wonders);

New Order
Joy Division
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet
Soft Cell
Men Without Hats
David Bowie
Depeche Mode (flavour of the month ATM)
Howard Jones
The Cure
The Clash
Huey Lewis & The News
The Vapours
Nena
Gary Numan
Karftwerk
MARRS
......etc.

Then the occasional obscure stuff like;

Dead Can Dance
Cocteau Twins
Severed Heads
Skinny Puppy
The Wolfgang Press

That's a great list of performers! One of my favorites from Peter Gabriel is Red Rain, the lead track from his hugely successful 1986 release 'So.' When I used to work in radio, Louisa Ritchie (Brian Ritchie's, of the Violent Femmes, wife) had the on-air shift directly following me for about 6 months. One day when she showed up for her shift, I was playing this song on the air and she I started singing along with Gabriel. A great/fun memory :-)

I really like Moroder too - both his music and the car that donned his name!

Thinking about early Moroder reminded of 'Ruckzuck' by Kraftwerk, as it's of the same vintage and electric style. Anyone who remembers the PBS show Newton's Apple should be familiar with this tune. Interesting history regarding PBS's use of it on the show - look it up if you're interested.

I haven't heard that classic from the Nails in quite some time - thanks Jeff! A lot of good spoofs of that one on YouTube.

Clif Magness is best known for the work he's done on behalf of other recording artists, however, back in 1994, he released his own album, simply titled 'Solo.' By that time, AOR (album oriented rock) was quickly being superseded in the popular mainstream by the Seattle grunge sound, thus it went largely unnoticed, despite being a great album. As I value over-looked gems such as these, I just love rocking out to their anthemic tracks in my D, such as this one :)

Love the intro to this power ballad from Steelhouse Lane - warm analog synth pads backing a fantastic electric guitar solo (sounds surprisingly good on the stock Craigs, but then again, so does most AOR/Melodic rock, at they bias around mid frequencies)

In fairness to my friend Lou, I thought I'd explain why I think Blind Melon sucks.

I like uplifting positive melodic music that makes me feel like I'm Tom Cruise in Top Gun (1986), piloting my F-14 Tomcat into the danger zone, especially when driving my DeLorean :)

Thus, the last thing that I want to listen to is a chaotic disjointed mess of angst filled lyrics set to an uneven blend of jam band and alternative rock instrumentals. It's just not my thing, but neither are most Seattle-styled alternative rock / grunge bands.

Not to mention that grunge and alternative rock suppressed the popularity of my preferred AOR (album oriented rock) and melodic rock, at least in this country anyway - so I supposed that you could fairly say that there's some disdain/animosity present in my personal feelings toward those genres of music.

More power to you though if that's what you like - to each their own :)

But they still suck :p

To the contrary.

When I worked in radio, it was at a AAA (adult album alternative) formatted station, and Blind Melon was one of the stables/cornerstones of our playlist at the time. In fact, I very well may have listened to Blind Melon more than you have, as hard as that may be to believe. I'd play them on the air constantly. I actually met the band twice and interviewed Shannon Hoon personally for my station (who, by the way, wasn't all that impressive).

The interview that I most enjoyed doing during my time with that station was Art Alexakis of Everclear - he was VERY impressive.

Boo
07-06-2014, 06:04 PM
Everclear is nice. But I truly don't think you listened to Hoon more than I have. And if you were putting anything on the air it would have been the commercial Melon tunes which, like any band, are not their best.
But anyway, to each his own as said before we can agree to disagree. Blind melon and bush or Kraft werk and top gun. Automate 2100 or kjet. Catalytic converter or headers. Whatever tickles your pickle!
After all freedom of choice is REALLY what DMC Today is all about!!! Now that's something you can't deny!

I love CCR. Great band, but they need a lesson about geography.

In the song "Cotton Fields" they mention being " Down in Louisiana; just about a mile from Texarkana ," which is inaccurate as it's approximately 30 miles from Texarkana to the Louisiana state line.

Though, speaking of Louisiana, if Steve doesn't make it up to New York, I'll bring the rolling basket case to him.

That's another thing that distinguishes our separate taste - I rarely, if ever, actually listen to or note the lyrics of a song. I used to joke that for the Drew Carry show instead of "Cleaveland Rocks" their theme song should have went "Hush, Keep it down now, it's Drew Carry."

More crappy music from Josh. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for this song and its singer. There's something very montage-y like about it/her that I just can't get them out of my head - kinda like the modern day equivalent of Robert Tepper. And no, I haven't seen The Fault In Our Stars (2014) yet, but it sounds really good and I actually look forward to my eventual viewing.

This album nails a modern 80's album really well. They nailed the feel AND the songs are good!

There's a lot of music with potential in this genre, but a lot of what I've heard has too much lo-fi beaten in to it. Nobody would have had that synth setup and then recorded on used 2-track tape wound onto galvanized trash can lids. Lay off of the wow & flutter filters guys!

OK, so sed's recent post about the AWESOMENESS of the '80's featuring that CIP film clip got me on a bit of an '80's kick lately

The group Magic Dance is PURE '80's melodic AOR (they even mix their recordings using authentic '80's analog / solid state gear so that it has a soft warm sound instead of a crisp bright digitized sound), and Still Haunting Me is one of their best tracks to date.... if that distinctive synth pad opening riff doesn't pull you in, then I don't know what would.
